‘The Reckoning’ Part One

This month we will be visiting the recently opened gallery space Sierra Metro, located in a disused testing facility for the Northern Lighthouse Board in Granton, to see ‘The Reckoning’ Part One.

Curated by Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, in collaboration with Kings Artist Run Initiative from Melbourne, The Reckoning features sculpture, film and installation by eight artists from Scotland and Melbourne which will then tour to Australia in Autumn 2009.

We will be joined by some of the exhibiting artists including Derek Sutherland who uses low-tech, ostensibly mundane materials to create unexpected configurations and arrangements; Jonathan Owen creates sculptures from found objects and intricate cut-outs in 2D to address the themes of British suburbia; Danica Chappell makes work using photography, video and installation to explore concepts of oppressiveness; and Darren Farquhar is a performance artist based in Edinburgh who draws his influences from cult cinema and drum-based, sub-pop music. 

Other exhibiting artists featured in the exhibition include Kel Glaister, Tamsin Green and Jackie McNamee from Melbourne, Australia and Edinburgh-based Jessica Harrison – who some of you will remember from the Spin event at Edinburgh Printmakers’ last year.

 

Group Show at doggerfisher

This month presents an opportunity to see and discuss work by a group of young artists in one of Edinburgh’s most ambitious commercial galleries, doggerfisher.

doggerfisher opened in 2001 with a solo show of new work by Edinburgh College of Art graduate, Jonathan Owen. In a four-star feature in The Guardian, Elizabeth Mahoney wrote: ‘If it was in London, New York or Berlin, Edinburgh’s new contemporary art gallery doggerfisher, wouldn’t make headlines. But in Scotland, where an art scene flourishes without a network of commercial galleries supporting work other than painting, it is causing something of a stir.’

Five years on from this article, doggerfisher’s Director, Susanna Beaumont, is taking the gallery and its artists across the globe from Europe to the States. Not only is Beaumont promoting a high calibre of innovative practitioners, but she is still one of the leaders of this field.

There will be an opportunity to talk to Jonathan about his work in the show and reconsider Susanna Beaumont’s fascination for artists working in the medium of paper.
