For our first visit of 2013, we will be exploring ECONOMY at Stills with the exhibition’s curator, Kirsten Lloyd, who will join us in discussing the ideas behind the exhibition.
Primarily an exhibition of photography and film, ECONOMY includes work by artists such as Jeremy Deller, Tracey Emin, Melanie Gilligan, Claire Fontaine and Martha Rosler. The curators have also commissioned polemic texts by local and international writers, activists, journalists and artists to accompany the exhibition, and in turn, they respond to the key themes of migration, labour, sexuality, the crisis of democracy, the quest for alternative futures, the promise of Scottish independence in the context of a competitive global economy and the demise of the Empire of Europe.
ECONOMY is conceived as an exhibition and public forum comprising a website and a series of talks and events to generate constructive public discussion on how the economy impacts upon our lives. It is also presented across two venues, Stills Gallery in Edinburgh and the CCA in Glasgow.

A visit to Tramway who are participants in British Art Show 7.
Spread over three of Glasgows key contemporary arts venues, CCA, GOMA and Tramway, British Art Show 7 comes to Glasgow with new works created especially for the city at each of the venues.
Occurring once every five years, British Art Show is recognised as the most ambitious exhibition of contemporary art in the UK, and comes to Glasgow for the first time since 1990. Organised by Hayward Touring and curated by Lisa Le Feuvre and Tom Morton, nine of the 39 artists selected for the show have a special relationship with Glasgow, having been trained or still based in the city. Artists at Tramway are Karla Black, Roger Hiorns, David Noonan, Steven Claydon, Emily Wardill, Duncan Campbell, Luke Fowler, Sarah Lucas, Maaike Schoorel, Karin Rugaber, Keith Wilson, Edgar Schmitz, Matt Darbyshire, Cullinan Richards, Mick Peter and Spartacus Chetwynd.

For our first SPIN:Glasgow event of 2007, we will visit the Catherine Sullivan exhibition at CCA, the first Scottish exhibition by LA-based artist.
Sullivan initially trained as an actress, and although she works in a variety of media, her best-known work is in film and video. The works explore human mores and conventions and is rich in cultural, cinematic and historical references.
Ice Floes of Franz Joseph Land (2003) is a multi-screen black and white projection that takes as its starting point, the Chechen rebel takeover of the Russian musical, Nord-Ost in 2002. The tragic incident, which resulted in the deaths of many captives and all of the Chechen terrorists, has been segued by Sullivan into Veniamin Kaverin’s Two Captains (1942), a classic Russian love and adventure novel about polar expansion in the Arctic – also the musical upon which Nord Ost was based.
Sullivan recreates the ten sections of the novel through a series of 40 vignettes in which actors perform pantomime- like actions that are carefully choreographed and stylised to recall musical theatre traditions.

Artist Ruth Barker will host an informal discussion about the CCA’s current exhibition, Test Transmission, which explores video artists relationship with television. There will also be a special screening of some work in the CCA cinema.

Spin: Glasgow gave free bus tours to visitors to view some of the key exhibitions during Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.
Over two weekends (22 & 23 and 29 & 30 April 2006), Tramway curator Lorraine Wilson and artist Ruth Barker visited the Patti Smith exhibition at the Mitchell Library, Ross Sinclair at the CCA, Becks Futures 2006 at Trongate, Lily Reynauld at Mary Mary Offsite, A.R. Lamb and Anne-Marie Copestake at Glasgow Sculpture Studios and Cabin Exchange in a square in Pollokshaws.
