This month we will be making our way to the City Art Centre for their new exhibition Glean: Early 20th century women filmmakers and photographers, where we will be joined by the exhibition curator Jenny Brownrigg.
This ground-breaking exhibition presents the work of fourteen pioneering women photographers and filmmakers working in Scotland during the early 20th century. The women are Violet Banks (1886-1985), Helen Biggar (1909-1953), Christina Broom (1862-1939), M.E.M. Donaldson (1876-1958), Dr Beatrice Garvie (1872-1959), Jenny Gilbertson (1902-1990), Isobel F Grant (1887–1983), Ruby Grierson (1904-1940), Marion Grierson (1907-1998), Isobel Wylie Hutchison (1889-1982), Johanna Kissling (1875-1961), Isabell Burton-MacKenzie (1872-1958), Margaret Fay Shaw (1903-2004) and Margaret Watkins (1884-1969).
These women present different accounts of Scotland, covering both rural and city places and communities. The exhibition will show the breadth of their photography and filmmaking, offering a critical analysis of their work and how these informed the work they made, and the different narratives we see emerging from their work in Scotland. It is the first time their work will have been seen together, and it uncovers a previously untold story within the history of Scottish photography. Exhibits will be drawn from a broad selection of private and public collections.
Jenny Brownrigg is Exhibitions Director at The Glasgow School of Art. Her research interests include modern and contemporary Scottish women artists.

Join our SPIN host Alhena Katsof in a special opportunity to visit Toby Paterson’s studio.
Toby Paterson was born in Glasgow in 1974. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating from the former in 1995. In Glasgow, he is represented by The Modern Institute and in London, by Sutton Lane. Paterson won the 2002 Becks Futures Prize and received a Creative Scotland Award in 2006.
Recent projects include solo shows in The Hague and London, group exhibitions in San Francisco, Belgrade, Madrid and Middlesborough, and the commission of permanent works at Tramway in Glasgow, and at BBC Scotland’s new headquarters and on the campus of Warwick University. He is also developing work for the seven stations that constitute the Docklands Light Railways planned Stratford International Extension. Paterson’s interest in cities and their architecture is manifested throughout his work in the form of painting, sculpture and photography. He currently lives and works in Glasgow.

For our next SPIN:Glasgow event, were going to go out of the galleries and into the city!
Glasgow has some fantastic pieces of public art in places throughout the city – some you might have noticed, some you might have walked by lots of times without noticing them, some youve wondered about and wanted to find out more.
One of Glasgow’s most prominent artists in this field is Stephen Hurrel. Were really pleased that Stephen has agreed to meet with us for the next SPIN:Glasgow event to talk about one particular piece of his work – The Rings in Glasgow’s Buchanan Galleries. After talking with Stephen about his work, we may then visit another public art work by Douglas Gordon (who has just opened a major retrospective of his work at the National Galleries of Scotland). This work, a neon sign, is very important in that its one of the few things that the city of Glasgow owns by this artist, who is widely considered to be Scotlands most prominent contemporary artist.
