This month we pay a visit to the new home Edinburgh Printmakers in the former North British Rubber Company HQ, Castle Mills in Fountainbridge.
The £11million project has created an international centre for printmaking and it will host a year-round programme of exhibitions, events and learning opportunities. The new open access print studio provides spacious, low-cost printmaking facilities for artists including etching, lithography, screen-printing, relief printing and digital printmaking.
Also on show is a new body of work by German artist Thomas Kilpper. The Politics of Heritage vs. the Heritage of Politics is a large-scale, site-specific floor carving commissioned by the Printmakers to celebrate and launch their new home of Castle Mills.

For our June Spin event, we will visit Edinburgh Printmakers to discuss Robert Powell’s latest exhibition, Species of Space. We will be joined by the artist as well as several members of the studio and gallery staff.
Species of Space takes its title from Georges Perec’s playful 1974 essay collection in which the author considers, in minute detail, the way in which we inhabit various everyday spaces from the street to the bedroom. Like Perec, Robert Powell is attentive to scenes of ordinary life: his prints are rich with details and are absurd, humorous and often grotesque. Powell also makes a dizzying array of art historical, literary and mythological references, yet gives them all a witty twist. The exhibition brings together framed print works with three-dimensional constructions – a dollshouse and a cityscape – that also contain Powell’s carefully observed carnival of characters. Most of the work on display was create onsite at Edinburgh Printmakers, and there will be a chance to chat about the facilities and courses offered by the studio during our visit.

This month we will be visiting the Edinburgh Printmakers to see the work of British artist John Goto who has made a new series of apparently abstract images entitled Mosaic prompted by the invasion of the Gaza Strip by the Israeli Defence Force.
Taking the contentious events of the 2008-2009 Israel/Palestine conflict as his main focus, Goto attempts to probe what appears to be deliberate media confusion and deception and get through to a glimpse of some of the individual deaths. Goto has worked with images made by eye-witnesses using mobile phones and a software program called Mosaic – which is used to censor images by a technique of pixelated obscuring. These pictorial abstractions have been described as being reminiscent of the colour systems paintings made by artists Johannes Itten, Paul Klee and Max Bill.
For this exhibition Goto has worked with the Edinburgh Printmakers on the research and development of a newly commissioned work that explores the convergence of traditional printmaking techniques with digital image manipulation and printing.
We are also delighted to announce that artist Calum Colvin will be joining us to discuss Goto’s work. Calum Colvin is one of Scotland’s leading artists with works held in major public collections including the National Galleries of Scotland. His work explores the boundaries of painting, photography, sculpture and electronic imaging.

This month, we will visit Edinburgh Printmakers to see an exhibition of new commissions and 40 years of Printing at Edinburgh Printmakers Part 2 – 1987-2007 exhibition.
Edinburgh Printmakers regularly commissions contemporary artists across various artistic disciplines to collaborate on-site with master printmakers on the production of limited edition prints. This exhibition of new commissions ranges from the work of established artists to the newly emerging and recent graduates. Artists include David Shrigley, Toby Paterson, Gordon Robin Brown and Jessica Harrison.
Joining us will be Alastair Clark and Michelle Berry who will take us behind the scenes for a tour of the artist studios before discussing the exhibiting prints and artists.
Alastair Clark is a practicing artist and Assistant Director of the Printmakers. Michelle Berry is a practicing artist and is the Audience Development and Education Officer at Edinburgh Printmakers.
