Peter Doig No Foreign Lands was one of the highlights of this year’s Edinburgh Art Festival. We will be joined by the exhibition’s co-curator, Julie-Ann Delany, Curator at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, to discuss this major exhibition of paintings by one of the most internationally-renowned artists.
Over a career of nearly three decades, Peter Doig has reinvigorated the medium of painting. His inventive style, sensuous palette and suggestive imagery set him apart from the conceptualism dominating much of contemporary art. A willingness to take up the challenge still posed by the paintings of Gauguin, Matisse, Bonnard and Edward Hopper places him in a long line of great colourists, expressive handlers of paint and creators of richly textured worlds.
This is Doig’s first major exhibition in the country of his birth and showcases works created during the past ten years, much of which the artist spent in Trinidad. The exhibition has been critically well-received so it should make for a really interesting discussion.
