For our February session, we will be discussing the major retrospective exhibition, Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance, where we will be joined by the curator of the exhibition, Alice Strang.
Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance is a survey of the Portuguese artist’s work that brings politics to the fore. This major exhibition is the first ever retrospective of Paula Rego’s work to be held in Scotland. Rego is one of the most important artists living in Britain today. Born in Lisbon in 1935, she is celebrated for her intense and courageous paintings, drawings and prints. The exhibition spans over 50 years of her international career, from the 1960s to the 2010s. It features more than 80 works, lent from public and private collections. Rego is admired for her courageous exploration of moral challenges to humanity, such as political tyranny, gender discrimination, abortion, female genital mutilation and the death of civilians in war. Other works in the exhibition begin with her Portuguese roots and lived experiences, or respond to current affairs and stories from literature, cinema, folklore, mythology and art history.

This month’s Spin event will examine drawing and mythologies through the work of the young Japanese artist, Eri Itoi.
The title of exhibition, Chinmi, is a Japanese word that is usually used to describe food which you are not used to eating or have never had before or something you dont think is edible. It also means delicacy. And delicate defines Eri work, which is best described by the Saatchi Gallery on Particulars at David Risley Gallery, London:
We are so used to artistic bombast, it’s almost a shock that somebody’s debut solo show, just a few months after graduation from the Edinburgh College of Art, would consist of tiny sheets where the graphite lines seem evanescent, lined up plainly and systematically, almost asking, with a strange kind of confidence, viewers to spend much more than just a passing glance with each in order to begin to unravel the many parts to the whole.
Hidden at the back of Analogue’s bookshop, this little gem of a gallery promotes young artists on an international scale who have an illustrative nature to their work. This complements the organisation’s collection of art and design publications and periodicals. Eri will be present along with Analogue’s Co-Director Julie Nicoll.
