Max Hymes

London-based sculptor Max Hymes is the first artist to exhibit in Glasgow Sculpture Studios new gallery, with an exhibition of new work.

Hymes’ practice investigates the use of decoration and embellishment within sculpture, using elements such as screens and plinths to provide specific platforms for his works. He embraces an eclectic mix of British Folk Art and Arts and Crafts aesthetics, incorporating wood marquetry, wicker and beadwork, with more recent materials such as Perspex and pins.

Glasgow Sculpture Studios was set up in 1988 by Glasgow School of Art graduates, in response to the lack of professional facilities for large-scale sculptural production in the west of Scotland. It now comprises large-scale production workshops and studio spaces for over 30 artists based in the city.
