END OF THE RED ROAD

Glasgow: Spin discuss photographic work created at the Red Road flats in north Glasgow. This exhibition has been created in partnership between Street Level Photoworks and the Red Road Flats Cultural Project.

This exhibition contains a selection of work by Iseult Timmermans focusing on the lives of people living in the Red Road flats, where she has worked since 2004. It includes portraits, creative photography from the collaborative programme, documentary images from inside the last inhabited flats at 10 Red Road Court and the sealed off depths of the underground entertainment complex. The exhibition explores both the capturing of reality and the creative playing with representation as a way of preserving a sense of the place and the people that have passed through it.

Iseult has co-ordinated the Red Road Community Studio for the past two years and involved hundreds of current and ex-residents of the flats in a series of creative photography projects and events. The Community Studio closed on 31 January 2012, as 10 Red Road flats are iconic in Glasgow – once the tallest in Europe and the showcase of Glasgow Housing Corporation’s social housing policy – they now stand poised on the brink of demolition. The history of the Red Road Flats is much more than the powerful architecture and the aspiration of housing policy – it is a history of changing populations, an intricate web of stories and the many thousands of individual’s lives that have crossed the path of the Red Road.

An exploration of London-based artist, E.J. Major’s first solo show, Try To Do Things We All Can Understand.

Major presents four bodies of work from the past four years, all distinct, yet complementary journeys around private/public concerns. The artist trained as a photographer and social scientist and her work is rooted in questions of identity. She explores the individual as a physical and psychological collage; a study of the ways in which we are simultaneously created/self-creating, and of the way our worlds and ourselves entwine.

Spin Around the City 2004

Spin was invited by the Scottish Arts Council and UZ Events to organise talks, informal discussions and bus tours for the public at the Glasgow Art Fair. Spin used the opportunity to organise an exclusive bus tour for Spin members, which took in the highlights of RAW (Real Art Weeknd) and included a brunch reception (courtesy of Spins sponsor at the Glasgow Art Fair, the City Inn on Finnieston Quay).
