This month we will be joined by Senior Curator Stephanie Straine as we head to Modern One’s new exhibition Do Ho Suh: Tracing Time.
South Korean-born, London-based Do Ho Suh (born 1962, Seoul) is one of the world’s leading contemporary artists. This expansive exhibition will explore the foundational role that drawing and paper play in Suh’s artistic practice, focusing on his collaborative methods, experimental techniques, and innovative use of materials.
Suh creates engaging and imaginative artworks that ask questions about home and identity. ‘Home’ is so much more than the place you live. Your own version of home is a fundamental part of who you are, influenced by your day-to-day life and your deepest memories. Do Ho Suh explores some of these fascinating ideas in his first solo exhibition in Scotland, taking over an entire level of Modern One. It will present the artist’s complex and compelling thread drawings – in which cotton thread is embedded in handmade paper – alongside architectural rubbings, paper sculptures, cyanotypes, printmaking and watercolours.
There will also be an immersive installation of Suh’s famed ‘hubs’, life-size sculptures that recreate physical spaces in colourful, translucent fabric. Visitors to the exhibition can enter and move through this innovative reimagining of places meaningful to the artist and his life.

Join our SPIN host Alhena Katsof and the artist Katy Dove for a discussion about Katy’s solo exhibition Rhythm Section.
Rhythm Section is the culmination of Katy’s two-year residency at Platform. Working in collaboration with musicians, architects, a choreographer and artist Simon Yuill, she has produced a body of new work that includes an animated film exhibited alongside watercolours, drawings and paintings. These works exemplify her ongoing approach to slowing down time and concentrating the viewer’s attention through colour shifts, sound, simple forms and shapes that build into immersive environments. The exhibition reflects the diversity of opportunity open to Katy during her PARTners residency and combines both Katy’s own studio-based practice and work made through community projects.
Rhythm Section will be the first major exhibition at Platform since it opened in 2007. The Bridge, the award-winning building which houses the gallery, was designed by Gareth Hoskins. It has been the recipient of numerous awards to date including the Royal Institute of British Architects National Award (2007), the Scottish Design Awards Best Public Building (2007) and the Scottish Design Awards Architecture Grand Prix 2007.

This month, we will visit doggerfisher to see the work of Ilana Halperin.
In Towards Heilprin Land, volcanic stories gathered from the Smithsonian Institution in the USA, collide with polar encounters from a fragile landmass in the far north. The nature of love is explained by a geoscientist; volcanologists talk about their long-term relationships with volcanoes from around the world and an eco-expedition aboard a ship to north-east Greenland is charted through a new series of drawings, photographs, watercolours, etchings, videos and text.
Ilana Halperin has a curiosity about the physical world. She has an interest in fathoming out the nature of geological change and the movement of time in relationship to her own life, encounters and travels. Projects often involve travelling to remote locations and performing actions or poetic gestures.
Joining us will be Ilana Halperin to discuss Towards Heilprin Land and to talk about her fascination with the relationship between geological phenomena and daily life. She will also give a performance on the evening – a very special treat for our Spin members!
